Artemis
Artemis Mourat has almost 50 years of experience performing, teaching and researching dance throughout the world.
She is of Greek and Turkish descent and her love for both cultures shines through in all that she does. She has
received numerous awards, is widely published and is a highly sought after master instructor. All of her classes
include references to the history and cultures that have gifted these dances to us. Artemis is a loving and articulate
teacher. And she believes that we can use music and dance to build bridges across cultures.
Artemis will present two classes: Stagecraft and American-Style Cabaret.
Stagecraft
Regardless of your style of dance, this workshop is perfect for every performer. Subjects will include: commanding your space,
smooth transitions, keeping it interesting, accessing your vocabulary in the heat of the moment, deciding when to do what,
understanding the music, floor patterns and where the "8's" are.
American-Style Cabaret
This is the exciting dance that made America fall in love with belly dancing, and it is making a big comeback!
Vintage Oriental is a more accurate name for this vivacious and legitimate style of belly dance. It is commonly referred to
as American Cabaret or AmCab but there is very little about it that is American except for the pizzazz and some of the
dramatic elements. AmCab combines Pan-Arabic, Turkish and other MENAHT (Middle East, North Africa, Greek, and Turkish) dance techniques.
The exciting and dramatic music was mostly from Arabic, Greek and Turkish bands. It includes a 5 to 8 part show, many props,
the most elaborate veil work of all the forms of belly dance, floor work, audience participation and more. This workshop will
teach you about the history of Vintage Orientale dance and its multi-part show concept, the elements of a typical show, lots
of steps that typify this style of dance and (time permitting) and some great video footage.

Chelydra
Chelydra has been a student of middle eastern dance since 1978,
and began performing professionally in 1981. She was the artistic director
of the Caravan East dance troupe from 1981-1997, and has performed and taught dances of
North Africa and the Middle East
at the award-winning Fields DanceStudio since
1985. A two-time featured cover artist and current contributing author to Zaghareet! magazine, she
is also the producer of the No Frills series of instructional
videos. In 2004, her Andalusian-Moroccan Romany choreography was one of the entries selected to be
featured in the Old Dominion University Local Choreographer's Showcase, and in 2006, a
ghawazee duet choreographed by both Chelydra and Aegela was chosen for showcase presentation.
Chelydra presents authentic folk dances of the Middle East and North Africa along with modern folkloric
fusion adaptations, including a tap-dancing melaya leff, a hip-hop khaleegy, and a techno ghawazee.
She considers dancing to be serious fun.
Chelydra will present Retro Fusion Fun. An energetic fusion of Persian bandari, samba,
jazz and belly dance, with a cheeky tribute to Steve Martin thrown in for good measure. What's not to like?

Dance Party
The stars are out at the beach, and the stars are YOU! The evening dance party is a
great time to try out your latest & greatest costume
and choreography. Have you always wanted to try something just a little bit different -
but never had the right setting? This is it! Be experimental! Be daring! Be playful!
Time limit is seven minutes (but remember, less is sometimes more).
Performing slots for the dance party are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Ten openings are served for returning performers, and six are reserved for new participants.
THE POLICY FOR RETURNING PERFORMERS HAS CHANGED. Returning performers who were wait-listed
at the last BBB are given priority through June 30th of the following year. Performers on the
wait list will receive performance slots as they become available. Openings have become available as
late as the day of BBB, so do not despair if you are wait-listed!
To be fair to everyone, performers may only dance once (group or solo).
You must register for the seminar to qualify for a place in the programme.
